Diaspora Africa, in partnership with IOM Nigeria, is thrilled to announce the inaugural cohort of the Diaspora Africa Migration Media Hub, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the coverage of climate migration issues in Nigerian media. After a rigorous selection process, 20 outstanding journalists, news writers, and content specialists from Nigeria have been chosen to participate in the program, which will focus on “Reporting Climate Migration in Africa” in its first year.
The two-day training program will bring together facilitators and media professionals from across Africa to create a dynamic learning environment that fosters a deeper understanding of climate-induced migration and sustainable development concerns. The training will employ a range of methods, including interactive lectures, panel discussions, group activities, and solution journalism, to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in climate storytelling.
Diaspora Africa’s pedagogical approach is centered on empowering participants to critically engage with reality and discover their potential to transform their world. The training will provide a comprehensive introduction to the intersectionality of climate change, migration, and storytelling, with a focus on practical, experiential learning.
The program is designed to cultivate three key competencies: understanding climate change and migration, effective communication and data analysis, and social innovation. Participants will have access to expert facilitators, climate writing clinics, case studies, and video sessions, ensuring they are equipped to tell powerful, accurate, and resonant stories on climate migration.
Chimee Adioha, Co-founder and Editor of Diaspora Africa, expressed excitement about the program, stating, “We are privileged to work with dedicated young professionals who are already passionate about climate change and migration. Our goal is to support and empower them to tell impactful stories that drive behavioral change.”
The selected participants have demonstrated a commitment to covering climate change and migration issues, and the training will build on their existing knowledge and experience. With this initiative, Diaspora Africa aims to contribute to a more informed and inclusive media landscape, shedding light on the critical issues surrounding climate migration in Africa.
